And my job is to get them to the truth because where do I want them to go? And my last question, and this is a fun question that we actually ask all of our new hires when they start at Eagle Hill, is if you could have 1 superpower, what would it be and why? He says, you know, when you do fire someone, they are going to hate you for the rest of their lives, but they dont want to work for you. Our primary mission is to develop the character of the young women that were training. You guys have to lead them verbally on the field. But there is a line, and if their average is under a 3.0 in that line and youre on scholarship, we try to get that girl to transfer, and if shes not on scholarship we try to get her to quit the team. Anson: Because one of the hardest things to construct in a young woman, and actually women in generaland Im sure Im preaching to the choir hereis confidence. And obviously it sounds like, Melissa, you do your own hiring. And she runs a character lab. How do you win their trust? Melissa: So 2 more quick questions for you. They are sprinting all over the place going from one session to the other, there was no break. But now theyre listening to me on what they need to do to get to their potential, because the numbers are not a subjective evaluation of performance. They dont want to be accountable. Part of that is hiring more coaches to do that. Anson: We have to do it, yeah, cause, you know, it destroys everything, you know, teams, companies. And all of a sudden in this New York Times magazine article shes talking about the extraordinary transformation that took place in her life when she was asked to memorize all of this literature and poetry. And he said, well, if thats the case none of you guys will get your PhDs and masters degrees. This kid is now there with his parents and hes got all Fs on his report card. And even though, basically I made the presentation to him and his and this is executive staff like Ive made to your listeners, I learned more reading that book, and what I loved about it is getting back to the principle of loving those you lead, loving those you coach, loving those you, teach because he clearly does. And then we also have them evaluate every teammate on whether or not they were living each core value, and we did it on a 4 point scale, sort of like a GPA, so 4 is obviously a 4.0, its an A average, so 4 is an extraordinary example of this core value. I am the person that can help them do better with the data. In fact thought maybe I should adopt these, these are fantastic. Shes the woman that wrote Grit.. Our values have shaped our culture over many years, and now we just need to illustrate them with some nice quotations for everyone to memorize. But also Id love to be a mind reader. Because as long as every kid I coach has an excuse for why they dont start or play or travel, they will never be able to change their place. And Im not allowed to touch self-belief.
